Professor Laura Huaracha was awarded Carthage’s “Distinguished Teaching Award” in 2022. She came to Carthage in 2007 after two years as a full time adjunct instructor at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Chicago where  she was awarded “Distinguished Educator of the Year.”

Originally from Kansas City, Mo., she earned a B.A. in journalism and mass communication from Creighton University in 1997, and an M.F.A. in graphic design from Savannah (Ga.) College of Art & Design in 1999. She was an instructor at MapleWoods Community College in Kansas City, Mo., and has worked at The Grand Group, a Chicago marketing design firm, where her main clients included Haagen-dazs, Motorola and Guinness. She was the main graphic designer for the Potbelly Sandwich Works chain for 2 years, helping the chain grow from 60 restaurants to over 150 when she left to pursue teaching full time.

She enjoys showing design and photography students that their work can make the world a better place, and encourages students to work for non-profits such as the Shalom Center, United Way of Kenosha County.

One of her favorite teaching experiences is jumping in the ocean- while taking students to Costa Rica each January for the course Photographing Nature. This course introduces students to the use of digital photography to explore plant and animal species and their habitats.

After studying species and their conservation concerns, students will complete a project that utilizes visual imagery to educate others about the value of and/or threats to biodiversity in Costa Rica.
